An odor like rotten garbage, sour milk, and dirty gym socks drifted from the playhouse. When Melody opened the
door, she saw a furry creature who stood three feet tall.
“Who are you? What are you doing in here?” Melody demanded with her hands on her hips and her green eyes
flashing.
“I’m Ingot. I needed a place to stay, and thought this was empty.”
She stomped into the room and wrinkled her nose. “What is that smell?”
“Smell?” Ingot glanced around the room.
“You stink.” She pointed at it and pinched her nose.
“I do not,” Ingot said offended.
“If you want to stay, you can, but only if you take a bath,” Melody said.
“I won’t take a bath.” Ingot said.
She found some perfume and sprayed it. "Mmm" Ingot said. The smell was no better. Melody sprayed air freshener.
“That smells like flowers,” it inhaled deeply. Melody was not satisfied.
Her hands flew up in the air, and she shook her head. “How can you smell the perfume and air freshener and not
yourself?”
“Maybe you just think I stink,” it suggested.
“I don’t just think you stink. I know you do. You’re going to have to take a bath.”
“I don’t like baths,” Ingot said and crossed its arms across its chest.
“If you want a place to stay you’ve got to take a bath.”
“No.” It planted its feet, stubbornly refusing to budge.
“What if I gave you some cookies?” she asked.
“No, I don’t like cookies.”
She thought as hard as she could . “We could play a game. If I win you have to take a bath.”
“And if I win I can stay one week, and I don’t have to take a bath. Is it a deal?” it asked.
She agreed. “What should we play?” she questioned.
“It’s your house. So you can choose, but I’ll warn you. I’m very good at games.”
Melody loved checkers and rarely lost. “How about checkers?” She had to teach it how to play. She just knew she
would win. They played checkers and Ingot won the game with a triple jump.
It sang and danced around Melody, “No bath. No bath. No bath. Hee he.”
Melody stood up and said, “I’m going home where it doesn’t stink.”
An hour later, she filled a metal tub with water in the backyard and added bubble bath. Then she called Shady, her
dog and gave him a bath. Ingot peeked out the playhouse window and watched.
She finished and led Shady into the playhouse and dried him.
“What’s that smell?” Ingot asked inhaling the fragrance.
“It’s Shady. I used my bubble bath. Doesn’t it smell good?” Melody asked.
“Yes it does.”
“Better than the perfume?”
It nodded and said, “Yes, much better.”
“That’s too bad.” She frowned and shook her head.
“Why is that too bad?” it asked.
“Cuz, you can’t take a bath or you could smell like Shady.”
“It’s not that I can’t take a bath.”
“I could let you use my bubble bath,” Melody offered.
“Okay.”
She brought the washtub, bubble bath and towels.
When she closed the door, she heard the water slosh and Ingot singing a tune. She smiled to herself happy that
her plan had worked, and said to Shady, "Finally! No more stinky critter!" Shady wagged his tail in agreement.
